19th Meeting of the ESNCH

May 10th - 13th, 2014

Dear friends and colleagues

The 19th Meeting of the ESNCH took place in Rome, Italy, from May 10th to May 13th, 2014 and was chaired by Edoardo Vicenzini (Stroke Unit - Department Neurology and Psychiatry, Sapienza University of Rome) and Marina Diomedi (Stroke Unit - Department of Neuroscience, Tor Vergata University of Rome). Beautiful city of Roma kept its promises, sending daily the well-known romantical “ponentino” – i.e. typical local chilling evening wind coming from West - and proved to be a warm and sunny city, offering good meals and a very pleasant and familiar atmosphere, typical of the Roman environment. The attractions drown by the “ancient city” has lived up the expectations of the congress.
The numbers of the congress in a glance:

Participants at the conference: 264
Countries: 41
Participants at the basic tutorials theory and hands-on: 45
Participants at the advanced tutorials: 38
Number of participants in the examination of the International Certification in Neurosonology: 55
Number of invited lecturers: 28
Number of oral presentations: 35
Number of posters presentation: 74

Despite the economic crisis we could obtain contribution from 13 sponsors from the main Companies involved in Neurosonology, and we honored the 3 free registrations given as prizes in the 2013 ESNCH congress edition held in Oporto. Moreover, ESNCH gave out 3 money prizes for the poster awards.
Scientifically, we had very favorable impressions and positive feedbacks from the tutorials. For the first time, the basic and advanced tutorials had been organized minimally with theory and as much as possible with live demonstrations on 32 real everyday patients, that kindly accepted to participate to the event. The demonstrations were organized in the plenary session, with also video facilities demonstrating in detail the exam execution, and in 6 small groups during the “hands-on” session, to facilitate the direct interaction of the participant with the expert. Fifty-five participants took part at the International Certification in Neurosonology. A consensus meeting on Sickle Cells Disease allowed a vivid exchange of views among the participants, leading to underline some interesting points of debate that need to be developed with future cooperation. The magistral lecture given by prof Aaslid - a pioneer of ultrasound development - on the topic “The Sound of Ultrasound”, followed by a musical moment of the “Banda dell’Arma dei Carabinieri” in the historical auditorium of the Sapienza University original from the early 19th century - where the congress was actually conducted - was a touching moment that opened the scientific sessions covering almost all the fields of Neurosonology. Ultrasound in acute stroke, intensive care applications, classifications of extra and intracranial atherosclerosis, ultrasound contrast agents, veins, posterior circulation new perspectives, were all followed with attention by the participants, despite the nice sunny weather and also after the lunches and coffee breaks. The welcome cocktail for more than 300 people started the social program in the auditorium terrace, the informal dinner took place in the historical city center near “Piazza Navona” at the restaurant “L’Angoletto” in a very familiar environment, while the Gala dinner was organized in the ancient astonishing “Palazzo Colonna”, in an mixed atmosphere from formal to familiar that we will never forget.

In sum, after “the hurly-burly’s done”, we want to thank all the speakers, participants and sponsors for their active role in the congress success. Particular gratitude to Mrs Maura Stella and to all the staff of PTS Rome Agency that took care of the organization with the most elegant touch.

We now give the ‘testimone’ – the baton - to Prof Branko Malojcic and we look forward to seeing you in Zadar in May 2015!
